Simple Steps to Younger Looking Skin
Why our skin ages
Why does skin on our face become wrinkled and dull as we get older? There are several reasons for this. The composition of the skin gradually changes as we age. We produce less collagen and the skin becomes thinner and less supple. It contains less moisture, oils, and elastin–the substance that enables skin to snap back into place.. Another factor in aging skin is that it does not repair itself as well as when we were younger. It also doesn’t exfoliate itself as effectively.
We cannot really stop the aging process, but if we take reasonable precautions, we can offset and slow down some of the factors that make our face look older. Here are some simple steps to take now to help improve the appearance of aging skin.
Reduce sun exposure
Exposure to sunlight has been identified as one of the major culprits that contribute to rapid aging of the skin. Many women who were sun-worshippers in their youth find that they pay a heavy price for this indulgence when they enter their forties and fifties. Skin that has been exposed to too much sun becomes leathery and wrinkled after a few decades of exposure. One of the most beneficial things you can do for your skin is to keep it protected by using sunscreen of SPF 25 or higher every day. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and try to time your outdoor activities so they take place in early morning or early evening.
Exfoliate
As the skin ages, the rate of skin cell renewal slows down, and the outer layers of skin accumulate a lot of microscopic debris, creating a dull appearance. Gentle exfoliation can help remove the outer dead layers of skin to expose fresh, glowing skin beneath. You can have your skin exfoliated by a professional, or you can buy products that contain chemicals like glycolic acid and do it at home. Follow up by using a high quality moisturizer to keep your skin from becoming dry. It’s important to avoid the sun when using a peel and wear sunscreen.
Glycolic acid sounds scary but it actually does wonders for your skin. It is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane. It is used to smooth wrinkles, fade skin discoloration and sun damage, and generally improve the tone and texture of the skin. Because of the small size of its molecules, it can easily penetrate the skin. It helps loosen the bonds that hold skin cells together, allowing dead skin cells to slough off more effectively. The skin feels softer and smoother, and its overall appearance is enhanced. Glycolic acid can be found in cleansers, face creams, home peels, and serums.
Eat healthy
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants which help at the cellular level to repair skin damage and protect your skin. A, C and E and the mineral selenium are thought to be particularly helpful in skin care. In addition to fruits and veggies, some evidence suggests that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as Salmon are particularly beneficial to the skin. And last but not least, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep you and your skin hydrated. You can read more in the article, Healthy Skin from the Inside Out.
Wash and moisturize your face at night
Your face is exposed all day to dirt, dust, and bacteria. Unlike our bodies that have clothing, your face has no protection to the elements. If you leave your makeup on overnight, you can suffer from clogged pores, skin inflammation, acne, and dull uneven skin. Your skin repairs itself at night and cleansed skin will absorb anti-aging ingredients in your serums and creams to help aid in cell rejuvenation. Change your skin routine
We all find a great product that works and stick to it for years – even when our skin’s needs change. The same product you used at 30 won’t necessarily be beneficial at 40 or 50. Even changing one product in your skin routine could produce better anti-aging results. Did you know that your skin can go into maintenance mode after about a year of using the same products consistently? To keep skin primed for rejuvenation, substitute creams with different anti-aging ingredients to get the best benefit. For example, use a retinoid cream versus using a cream with glycolic acid. Or use a home peel versus a scrub.
By following these simple steps, your skin will be healthier and take on a more glowing, youthful appearance. Tell me your anti-aging secret – what works for you?
All the best!
